I enrolled in the Modern Phylogenetics course because I was eager to explore new computational methods used in scientific modeling. Prior to this workshop, I had no background in phylogenetics, but I was motivated by the desire to expand my skills in areas that intersect with modern approaches to drug discovery. I am a pharmacist currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Pharmacology, and I hoped this training would introduce me to tools and concepts that could support my research interests.
During the workshop, I learned several foundational concepts and tools, including the principles behind MrBayes, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods, and the use of PAUP*. I am particularly grateful to Prof. John for sharing valuable literature resources, which helped me understand the theoretical aspects more deeply. I would also like to thank Noah for giving us access to the High Performance Computing system, which made the hands-on components meaningful and practical.
The collaborative learning environment was a major highlight for me. Working alongside fellow students—especially those with prior experience—was incredibly helpful, as they guided me whenever I struggled to grasp new ideas. A memorable moment was when Prof. John took the time to explain, in detail, the underlying principles of MrBayes, MCMC, and PAUP, ensuring everyone was on the same page. Noah was also patient and thorough in responding to each question raised. Initially, I faced challenges following the explanations on the board, but when I sought an overall summary using AI, the concepts became much clearer and the learning process felt smoother.
International collaboration significantly enriched this experience. Modern phylogenetics is still relatively new in Uganda, and having experts share this knowledge with us was both inspiring and empowering. I am very grateful to the organizers for making this possible.
Looking ahead, I see great potential for applying modern phylogenetic methods in drug discovery—an area I am passionate about as both a pharmacist and pharmacologist. For Uganda, this training introduces new scientific capabilities, especially in microbiology and related research fields. Personally, the skills and exposure I gained broaden my academic and career opportunities, including opening pathways for future PhD studies.
Finally, I extend my sincere appreciation to CEND and all the instructors for their dedication, mentorship, and hospitality throughout the workshop. The learning environment was supportive, and even the meals provided were excellent. Thank you for taking care of us and for making this an impactful experience.
